Mokhotlong Overnight

A True Cultural Odyssey

Activity Description

Tours Details
Day 1: Embark on a Journey Beyond the Ordinary

Venture deep into the heart of the Mountain Kingdom on this unforgettable two-day journey that combines breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and intriguing history. Starting from Underberg at 09:00 AM, we’ll ascend the legendary Sani Pass, climbing to dizzying heights as we traverse some of the most dramatic scenery Southern Africa has to offer. Along the way, enjoy an early tea at the Sani Top Church, perched atop the mountains, before continuing your ascent to the awe-inspiring Black Mountain, towering at 3240 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, take in the majestic views of Thabana Ntlenyana, the second highest peak in Africa, after Kilimanjaro.

Our journey then takes us further into the secluded village of Makhapung, where you’ll have a rare opportunity to meet a local traditional healer and witness a ceremonial dance while engaging in an authentic cultural exchange with the villagers. Savor a packed lunch during your visit, specially prepared by us. (Please inform us of any dietary needs at the time of booking.) After a day of enriching experiences we will descend into the Sehonghong Valley, where the remote trading town of Mokhotlong beckons. Upon arriving we will check into a humble yet comfortable local hotel where you’ll enjoy dinner and a restful overnight stay.

Day 2: Immerse Yourself in the Hidden Treasures of Lesotho

After breakfast, we’ll explore the historic streets of Mokhotlong, once famed as the most remote outpost in the British Empire. For our bird lovers, Mokhotlong means “the place of the bald ibis”. Take a leisurely stroll down the main road to marvel at the rare Spiral Aloe, before we head to the St James Mission to admire the fascinating architecture of their church ceiling. Keep your eyes peeled as we drive back through the Sehonghong Valley, home to the elusive Bearded Vulture. Upon returning to Sani Mountain Lodge, enjoy a leisurely lunch, surrounded by unparalleled views of the mountains. We then begin our scenic descent down the Sani Pass, arriving back in Underberg around 3:30 PM, bringing your extraordinary adventure to a close.

This two-day, one-night tour travels an additional 60km deeper into the heart of Lesotho, offering an immersive experience like no other. Departing from Underberg at 09:00 AM, this tour includes luxury 4×4 transportation, two lunches, dinner, breakfast, road taxes, levies, entrance fees, and the guidance of a private expert. With limited availability and a minimum of two participants, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to uncover the hidden gems of Lesotho.
